Personal Profile of John deBeckJohn de Beck is a graduate of the San Diego City Schools. He attended Cabrillo and Loma Portal Elementary schools, followed by Dana Junior High and Point Loma High School. He earned BA and MA degrees in business at San Diego State University. While he was attending college, he worked in retail, wholesale, and advertising businesses. His first teaching experience was at San Diego City College where he taught Retail Sales and Advertising. His full-time teaching career started in 1954 at Lincoln High School where he taught journalism, photography, typing, and marketing. During his 36 years in education, he also obtained a life credential in school counseling, and he finished his teaching career in 1990 working with at risk youth at Garfield High. He served as a consultant to over 20 California school districts, specializing in integrating Vocational and Special education. He has written numerous teaching guides, and a computer applications textbook. During his career he has been active professionally in the California School Board Association as an assembly delegate, and has served on numerous committees and task forces including their Nominating, Academic/Vocational, Legislative, and Urban Committees. He also is a long-term member of the Balboa Park Kiwanis Club where he assists in their school vision screening project which finds vision defects and gets students vision services. He also worked to assist elderly homeowners with their maintenance problems as a part of a community service. Board member de Beck lives in Bay Park with his wife, Maxine, and they have 7 children, 7 grandchildren and two great-grand children.
